"A racy pinot noir, tense with a sheath of graphite-laced tannin, set to cedary, mahogany oak seasoning as a strong currency, and laced with dark cherry, panforte, hazelnut and twiggy herbs, with a gentle smoky spice element in tow. It drives with its frisky acidity, a feature that keeps the wine refreshing and edgy, reminiscent of wines to be drunk a while down the trail. I liked the wine more with time spent with it, evolving attractively and offering more perfume and flavour as the hours went by. Serious stuff here, for those seeking pinot of firmness and architecture." - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front 94+ Points
Tolpuddle is a project run by Martin Shaw and Michael Hill-Smith MW from Shaw + Smith fame; they enlisted Murray Leake, Carlos Souris and Wendy Borg to look after the vineyard in Tasmania within the Coal River region, Adam Wadewitz oversees the winemaking for Tolpuddle as well as for Shaw + Smith and all their other labels and David LeMire MW oversees the marketing and distribution. The team focuses on quality above all else, and making delicious and honest single-vineyard wines. They produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in small quantities that sell out yearly and show great aging potential. The fruit is harvested and transported to Shaw + Smith in the Adelaide Hills, where Adam and the team make it. A Tolpuddle bottle is a true labour of love and an absolute treat for the consumer.
