Reed Frequency Botrytis Riesling
Sierra Reed heads over to New Zealand yearly to make Riesling under her own label in the Waitaki Valley, North Otago. In the 2023 vintage, when she arrived to begin her vintage, the weather had already shifted, and Botrytis or Noble Rot had already started to form on the fruit. The Botrytis looked impeccable, so she decided to let it carry on and pick it later than first intended and make a sweet Botrytised wine instead. We're so thrilled she did, as the result is a stunning example of sweet Riesling that is incredibly food-friendly with razor-sharp acidity that cuts through the display of complex and rich fruit, with flavours of lemon curd, orange rind and ripe peach.

Local winemaker Sierra Reed, and when I say local, I mean winery out of the back of Bunnings in Torquay and vineyard in Jan Juc, that local, has been making wine under her label Reed for the last 10 years and has made a good name for herself despite not allowing her wines to be scored or judged by critics. Sierra hasn't gained formal training as a winemaker; she's done vintages around the globe, learning from the best in the business, completing stints at Chandon in the Yarra Valley, Head Wines in the Barossa, Rippon in Central Otago as well as European vintages in Rheingau, Pfalz and Barolo to name a few. She's inquisitive and thinks about things deeply but is also pragmatic. She backs herself and her wines and works passionately, dedicated to her craft. Her wines are aromatic, ethereal and balanced expressions of the grapes and soil they're grown in.
