Mulline Vintners is a collaboration between Ben Mullen, a qualified viticulturist and winemaker, and Ben Hine, a lawyer and the business mind behind the project. Together, the two Bens set out to produce high-quality wines made with fruit grown throughout the surrounding Geelong region, Moorabool Valley, Surf Coast, and Bellarine Peninsula. They purchase fruit from like-minded growers and have their own home vineyard and winery in Portarlington. A breath of fresh air for the Geelong region, Mulline is a young, passionate, forward-thinking collaboration injecting new life and energy into the Geelong wine scene and collecting a lot of critical praise along the way.

Tasting Note

A delicate and elegant array of vibrant red fruits, floral notes, sweet spices, and earthy, green herbal undertones marry together nicely. The fruit is sourced from the Barwon Ridge vineyard in Barrabool, which was planted in 2000 on deep black loam and limestone soil. 25% of the fruit was left as whole bunches for fermentation bringing a nice herbal note and all the fruit was vinified in second use French oak.

‘You might expect this wine to be underpowered, given its 12% alcohol, but it’s anything but. The flavours are painted in watercolours but they are insistent, they have good spread, and there’s an array to them. Rose petals meet bright red cherries meet game, dry spice,  autumnal leaves and a semblance of red liquorice. It’s pretty, it’s spicy, it’s leafy and most of all, it’s cohesive. There’s a silken aspect to what is generally a pretty frisky palate, and gentle wafts of musk and mint. It’s lovely. It’s drinking well already but it will improve.’ -Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front 93 Points
